Sizzling Beijing-Inspired Beef Stir-Fry with Sweet-Savoury Glaze and Crisp Vegetables

Ingredients

  1. 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  2. 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  3. 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  4. 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  5. 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  6. 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  7. 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  8. 3 cloves garlic, minced
  9. 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  10. 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  11. 1 cup broccoli florets
  12. 1 small onion, sliced
  13. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  14. 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  15. 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  16. Salt and pepper to taste
  17. Cooked white rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss the sliced beef with cornstarch until evenly coated.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, and brown sugar. Set aside.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat.
  4. Add the beef in a single layer and sear for 2–3 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
  5. In the same pan, add remaining oil, then sauté garlic and ginger for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Add bell pepper, broccoli, and onion. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
  7. Return the beef to the pan and pour in the sauce mixture.
  8. Stir well and cook for another 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats everything evenly.
  9. Drizzle with sesame oil, sprinkle red pepper flakes if using, and adjust seasoning.
  10. Serve hot over steamed rice.
